What does it take to go from feeling shy, unprepared and terrified of putting oneself out there to be ready to be seen and heard on social media?
The truth.. It’s getting past the fear of being hunted.. Let me explain..
I was thinking about the time when I was a child and I would (quite literally) hide behind my mothers body.
I was shy and timid.
I did not want to approach strangers and I wasn’t the first to be in the front of the class. The world around me felt like a scary place.
In part because it was. I was surrounded by people for whom adversity was a part of their daily life.
And what happens in an unsafe environment is that you retreat.
You retreat into the safety of the familiar.
You turn blinders on so you can’t see the adversity.
It locks away a big emotional side of you that stays hidden away for so long that you eventually forget how to connect with it.
Fast forward to the present and you are starting an online business.
And you are meant to make yourself visible and be seen.
I now need to connect with people. With strangers on the internet. On that savannah where I could be hunted at any time.
That feeling of being hunted returns. My throat dries up, I forget what I’m going to say. It’s quite literally almost like the scene you see in movies with the kid up on stage, unable to say out the words.
It feels terrifying. What if I end up making a massive fool of myself?
So for all those people who have got past the fear, yay for you. But don’t make it sound like it was a walk in the park for the rest of us who have big mountains to overcome to be seen and heard.
Because without support, it’s no wonder people don’t get started. It feels lonely, scary and it’s the same feeling as being hunted.
Do you know why I know that?
It’s because I have felt it personally.
The journey of entrepreneurship or starting your own business is a big and bold enough of a move without having to do every single thing on your own.
You might be saying “I have all these ideas, I know what my expertise lies in. I just need to understand how I should put myself out there”

How can you make a start without fear and trepidation?
The simple answer is by building the foundation of discovering what you will say and how you will articulate it for social media.
And short-cut the success for yourself with skills from theater and behavior change.
Video communication on social media unlike on a podcast interview, zoom call, recording your own coaching calls or courses is all one-way communication.
There is no feedback loop of body language or any other visual cues you would usually rely on and is a relatively new style of communication which we are yet to master fully.
Which is why blending skills from behaviour change along with theatre has proven so effective in getting people unstuck.
Here are 10 change techniques that make you go from feeling judged, insecure and scared to confident with your messaging, even if you are shy introverted or not sure where to start.
These ten techniques use a variety of somatic movements as well as theater skills.
When used in conjunction with each other they inject fun, an element of goofiness’ in a safe space from which to build your confidence in a like minded community and above all, they are effective.
So do I need to have theater skills to be on social media now?
No you don’t.
But if you want a faster way to get started with being visible, these techniques give you a way in which to unlock that confidence to prepare your mind and body into being seen and heard.
Being seen and heard is fundamental to building your online presence with confidence if you are the face of your business.
But it’s with the lens of theater and using techniques that can change behavior in a safe setting is how you can unwire parts of yourself that are locked away or yet to come out.
Because unlocking that will help release that fight or flight but done in a safe space.
